Since the Detroit Tigers ended the regular season last Sunday, Heather Nabozny has had time to accomplish tasks normally considered a luxury. Nabozny, the Tigers' head groundskeeper, and her staff paid extra attention to sculpturing the pitching mounds on the field and in the bullpens at Comerica Park, stenciled the official postseason logos onto the turf and double-cut the outfield grass. She said the perpendicular mowing formed aesthetically pleasing rectangles for television viewers and tighter play for fielders. "It's like vacuuming twice," she added.
Two years ago, fourth-grader Charlie Palminteri had a vision for the concrete-hard, rock strewn Winston Wells Ballfield in Cruz Bay, St. John, Virgin Islands, where he and his friends played baseball. He wanted it green, soft and safe, so he made turf development the subject of his science fair experiment, cultivating test plots of the field's soil to see which mixture of sod, compost and sand would produce the softest results. Since then, and under the tutelage of Dave Minner, a turf specialist from Iowa State University, Charlie has seen the full practical application of his experiment.

Are you 100% sure you have annual bluegrass? Or could it be rough bluegrass? Annual bluegrass is a common winter annual weed that is very difficult to control as there are limited herbicides that can be POST applied in cool season grasses. Rough bluegrass is very similar to annual bluegrass but it is a perennial weed that reproduces from vegetative tissues instead of seeds. Therefore, our PRE applications will decrease annual bluegrass populations but not rough bluegrass populations.

The study will look at each level and determine the frequency of cultivation practices, reasons as to why or why not they cultivate, concerns about managing natural turfgrass fields, etc.
