Paul Gillen, now association past president, explains, "The nucleus of members of the Sports Turf Association has, since its inception in 1987, been based in Ontario. However we have long-supported sports turf managers from coast to coast. The transfer of our corporate identity into the federal domain recognizes more formally our dedication to the promotion of better, safer sports turf across the country."

The University of Georgia has developed some of the world's most popular bermudagrass hybrids, one of which will be used on three of the World Cup fields this summer in Brazil. Researchers Wayne Hanna and Kris Braman for the Turfgrass Breeding Program at UGA's Tifton campus worked together to create TifGrand grass. This is the world's first seed and pollen sterile bermudagrass, which is known for its darker color, tolerance to shade and durability.
