White clover and black medic are commonly found growing on low fertility, low maintenance sites. Black medic and clover are very competitive in low fertility sites because they host rhizobacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen into plant available nitrogen.

Eastern Michigan football coach Chris Creighton wants his team to have the attitude that it will play anyone, anywhere. "We'll play in a parking lot on glass," the first-year coach said. Creighton's attempts to change the culture within the Eagles' football program led to the school announcing Thursday it will replace its artificial turf with FieldTurf that looks like concrete. The project is scheduled to begin in July. The school was already planning to replace the 9-year-old surface at Rynearson Stadium this year.

As Purdue officials move closer to determining the final look for Ross-Ade Stadium's south end zone, one area that will get a closer examination is the playing surface. The harsh winter has impacted the recovery time for the Bermuda grass to the point where athletic director Morgan Burke is exploring the idea of switching to synthetic turf. The grass practice field also is struggling to recover.
"The lab is outfitted with lab tools, microscopes and a workbench, which allows me to take a close look at the sample and identify the disease-causing agent," said Lee Miller, turfgrass pathologist for University of Missouri Extension. "With the lab, turfgrass managers don't have to wait while samples are shipped back and forth to a plant diagnostic lab."
The 2014 Field of the Year application is on line and ready for you to fill out. The only major change from previous years processes concerns how the information from the Playing Conditions Index (PCI) is reported. Four PCIs are still required (one conducted out-of-season and three conducted in-season). The scores from each of the assessments need only to be transferred to the application. Attaching the four, separate full PCIs is no longer required. The deadline to submit an entry is Oct. 15.
