Wait . . . what? In honor of Mizzou's move to the Southeastern Conference, the Tigers are uprooting their existing artificial turf and replacing it . . . with more artificial turf?!?!
This month, Apple Valley High School put in a $1.4 million request for an artificial turf field as part of the capital expenditure budget request process. The new playing turf is the single largest line item on the school's request list this year. It's also at the bottom of that list of items, and for good reason, said school Athletic Director Pete Buesgens. "We completely understand the economics of the time," Buesgens said; "we know ... it's not gonna happen."
A little rain or frozen ground usually does not stop Whitman College, Walla Walla, WA athletes from hitting the fields to kick around a soccer ball or toss a Frisbee. However, when athletes run on muddy fields, their concern is usually for the game, and not the turf.
