The Maryland Turfgrass Council donated $50,000 to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources to establish the Turfgrass Pathology Endowed Fund. In addition the council has pledged another $20,000 annually for the next 5 years.
The Pennsylvania Turfgrass Council announced the PTC Undergraduate Scholarship winners at a luncheon at the Nittany Lion Inn. Each scholarship recipient was awarded $1,500 from the Council. Dr. Peter Landschoot, Coordinator for Penn State's Center for Turfgrass Science and PTC Technical Advisory Committee member, presented the students with their checks.
Spring has finally arrived and it is accompanied by the usual complement of infectious turf diseases. There should be no confusion between two "rhizoctonia" diseases. Yellow patch (aka cool season brown patch) prevails during early spring, when rainy weather is combined with cool nights. It also affects all turf species and the circular patches are most prominent on shorter mown turf. Brown ring patch (aka Waitea patch) visits later in the spring evening temperature increases. It is largely restricted to annual bluegrass.
The Brooklyn Cyclones will play home games on artificial turf this year, and the grass at the city-owned ballpark in Coney Island has already been ripped up and replace with synthetic. The grounds at MCU Park was switched from natural grass as part of the stadium's post-superstorm Sandy repairs — defying a 20-year trend in professional baseball toward natural grass fields.
The Sports Turf Managers Association announced its sponsorship and planning support of the United States National Arboretum's "Grass Roots" Initiative, the first peer-reviewed exhibit of its kind hosted by the governmental research center. The exhibit will feature an educational section entitled "Game Winning Grass" that will examine turf in sports fields and its importance to athletes and athletic performance, among other related topics. The exhibit will be peer-reviewed by the Crop Science Society of America and is expected to run four years on USNA grounds with construction anticipated to begin this fall.
