And Iowa State University senior hort major Kevin Hansen is beyond excited about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Not only will he work alongside the stars of his chosen profession, he'll be on the sidelines during the game. Hansen was selected for Toro's Super Bowl Sports Turf Training Program. He will spend 7 days in New Orleans helping prepare the game and practice fields for the Super Bowl XLVII.
Alec Kowalewski, Oregon State University's new turf specialist, jokes that two requirements for the job were to have a Polish-sounding last name and to be a graduate of Michigan State. That's because he replaces fellow MSU alumnus Rob Golembiewski. Kowalewski will divide his time between teaching, researching and working as a specialist with OSU's Extension Service to help the turf grass industry.
The German chemical company BASF is moving its pest-control business to Research Triangle Park, bringing an estimated 30 jobs as part of a consolidation of several of BASF's US businesses. BASF's Pest Control Solutions, Professional Turf & Ornamentals, Professional Vegetation Management and Market Business Development divisions will be called the BASF Specialty Products Department.
In 2005, parks and recreation operations manager Joel Dunn approached the Carson City, NV convention and visitors bureau with a proposal to boost sports tourism in the city. It paid off. The bureau's grant of $15,000, which covered costs such as event staffing and facility operations, allowed Dunn to bring in 12,000 visitors from outside of a 100-mile radius and more than $3.6 million in local spending.
