CA state senator calls for moratorium on synthetic fields
Senator Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) will introduce legislation on Wednesday calling for a new, more comprehensive study of crumb rubber synthetic turf amid growing concerns that the material is linked to cancer.
Hill told 2 Investigates the impetus for the study was widespread media reports highlighting new cases of cancer in athletes who had played sports on crumb rubber fields. If the bill is signed into law, it would require the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), a division of CalEPA, to complete the study by July 2017. A moratorium on new synthetic turf fields would last until January 2018.
