IL park commissioner pushing switch to artificial surface

Kenilworth (IL) Park District officials hope enough residents will head to the polls on Tuesday to give them a mandate how they should maintain Townley Field.

“I don’t know who is going to show,” said park board Commissioner Chip Kenyon, a supporter of replacing the southern two-thirds of the park with a synthetic surface.

Elections for the Kenilworth village, school and park boards are uncontested, but voters will be asked two referendum questions. Do they want Townley Field renovated with an artificial surface paid for by a residents group? And, do they support renovating the field with grass, which potentially could cause the district to raise property taxes?

“I feel the grass side will be defeated,” Kenyon said, because residents will oppose the possibility of paying higher taxes.
