Fungus gone, but Brentwood fields still not in top condition

BRENTWOOD, CA—Three athletic fields ravaged by outbreaks of a destructive fungus in recent years are about to open for the fall soccer season, but city employees and the soccer league that uses the fields disagree about how much the turf has actually improved. The Pythium and Fusarium fungi that have wreaked havoc at the 37.9-acre Sunset Park Athletic Complex in recent years, killing patches of grass and creating divots in the turf, have been nearly eliminated through fungicide treatments, reseeding and fertilizing, said Poldina Scherff, program director with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
