Long after the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, the work of preserving America’s landscapes continues. From Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell to university campuses, parks, and public gardens, grounds professionals play a critical role in maintaining the outdoor spaces that welcome millions of visitors.
For more than 100 years, the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has supported the professionals responsible for maintaining these essential spaces. From August 3–4, PGMS hosted its Regional Conference in Philadelphia, bringing together grounds managers, municipal leaders, campus professionals, and green industry partners for two days of education, collaboration, and hands-on learning focused on workforce development, sustainability, resource management, and emerging green industry technologies.
In a city recognized for its leadership in green infrastructure through initiatives like Green City, Clean Waters, Philadelphia provided an ideal setting for conversations about the future of landscape management.
“Every great destination begins with a great first impression, and that often starts with the landscape,” shared PGMS president Michael Gildea, CGM. “But, as expectations continue to grow alongside workforce and budget challenges, grounds professionals must come together and share solutions that sustain the places people value most.”
In addition to educational sessions, conference attendees participated in guided tours of some of the region’s most notable landscapes, including Swarthmore College, Chanticleer Garden, the University of Pennsylvania, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Pennsylvania Hospital, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. These experiences provided an opportunity to see innovative grounds management strategies in action while showcasing the expertise required to preserve historic and public spaces for future generations.
