SGL introduces TurfBase

SGL launched TurfBase, a revamped data management dashboard featuring functionalities that enable field managers to make proactive, data-driven decisions in their daily pitch maintenance, ensuring a high-quality playing surface. TurfBase is now available as both a mobile app and a desktop version.

TurfBase is the result of years of collaboration with field managers worldwide, a process that began two years ago. During initial knowledge-sharing sessions in 2023 and subsequent testing phases, field managers from clubs such as Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona and Allianz Stadium Twickenham provided valuable input on TurfBase’s functionalities and interface. Their insights led to a platform designed to meet the needs of modern field management.

Jim Buttar, head of grounds and technical operations at Allianz Stadium Twickenham, was part of the test group from the start and contributed to TurfBase’s development.

“My favorite feature is the Energy Monitor. It provides detailed insights into how much energy we’re using each month,” said Buttar. “This makes it easy to share accurate data with stadium facilities and management, showing that we’re doing everything we can to be efficient with our grow lights.

TurfBase provides field managers with 24/7 insight into critical field metrics. With this tool, managers can monitor and control the microclimate in the stadium or training facility anytime, anywhere.

TurfBase allows field managers to support their intuition with facts, communicate these insights clearly to team members or stakeholders, and translate them into data-driven action points for optimal and streamlined field management.

Additionally, intelligent models and growth algorithms offer recommendations on the use of other SGL products, such as grass growth lighting systems. This integration optimizes usage and results, making TurfBase an indispensable tool for efficient and effective turf management worldwide.

TurfBase includes nine modules designed to elevate pitch management. Examples include:

  • Live Data module: Real-time insights into field metrics like soil moisture, PPFD, and soil salinity. The customizable dashboard provides a clear overview of data collected by TurfPods.
  • Lighting module: Optimizes the use of grass growth lighting systems with recommendations based on live growth algorithms and transmission analyses, improving growth conditions while maximizing energy savings.
  • Registration module: Compares key growth and performance metrics over different periods to identify trends and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Energy Monitor module: Offers detailed insights into energy consumption and costs for lighting systems, helping grounds teams use resources efficiently and achieve sustainability goals.
