Application of biological control the focus of Penn State Extension workshop

Green industry professionals and others interested in biological control and sustainable pest solutions can learn about the latest recommendations and best practices by attending an upcoming Penn State Extension workshop.

“Biocontrol School” will occur from 9 a.m. to noon — and will be repeated from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. — Oct. 15 at Penn State’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center, 1446 Auction Road, Manheim.

This workshop is designed for greenhouse and nursery growers, extension educators, agricultural advisors, and anyone interested in sustainable, pesticide-reducing approaches to pest control.

Participants will explore the diverse range of biological control agents and their applications. They can gain practical experience in applying agents, checking agent viability and proper release techniques to maximize success.

Among other topics, participants can learn:

  • What biocontrol agents are available and the pests they target.
  • How to use pesticides safely while protecting pollinators.
  • Best practices for storing, handling and releasing biocontrol agents.
  • How to assess the viability of insects, mites and nematodes before release.

Organizers encourage attendees to register by Oct. 14. The course fee is $45.
