STMA making effort to reduce the use of the word “turf”

As STMA continues to position members as educated and experienced agronomic professionals, the association has also made a concerted effort to reduce the use of the word “turf.” Turf has become synonymous with synthetic field surfaces. Although many members may manage a synthetic surface in their inventory of fields, the profession is comprised of those who have degrees in plant and soil sciences, turfgrass management, horticulture, etc.

STMA is asking for your help. Replace the word “turf” with “natural grass” when referring to your field management practices to better differentiate from fields that are synthetic turf. Use the terminology synthetic turf when referring to a field that is not natural grass. Help STMA continue to redirect the use of the word. If you come across “turf” in any STMA materials, please contact STMAinfo@STMA.org.
