Sports Turf Company kicks off new stadium at the University of South Alabama

Sports Turf Company, a specialty sports construction and surfacing company, is excited to play a starting role in bringing football to the University of South Alabama’s campus for the first time. Over the last 10 years, the Jaguars have shared a football field at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.

On September 12, 2020, the university will play its first game in the 25,000-seat Hancock Whitney Stadium, the third field Sports Turf Company completed for the university in the past four years. This reflects Sports Turf Company’s commitment solutions that meet the university’s requirements and to earn long-standing relationships with each of its customers.

“Sports Turf is proud to have the University of South Alabama recognize our commitment to constructing the very best athletic fields,” said Todd Wiggins, president of Sports Turf Company. “The durability and safety that this field will provide makes it the highest caliber to benefit both South Alabama athletes and the university community as a whole.”

Sports Turf worked with the university to choose AstroTurf’s “RootZone 3D3 Blend Trionic” turf system. The performance system features blended monofilament and slit-film fibers. The RootZone adds a thatch layer of fibers, which encapsulates rubber infill to prevent it from migrating, significantly reducing “rubber splash” for better footing and less maintenance. AstroTurf’s patented Trionic fiber combines player-friendly, non-abrasive polyethylene (PE), with ultra-durable nylon for a 50-percent improvement in wear testing verses conventional PE fibers.
