David Hall of the The Virginian-Pilot profiles Casey Werkheiser, who is interning for longtime head groundskeeper Kenny Magner and his crew at Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. “Most fans probably wouldn’t look twice at Werkheiser except for one minor detail: She’s a woman, and there aren’t many of them doing what she does. A Virginia Beach native and former college field hockey player, 25, is one of only two full-time female groundskeeping interns in all the minor leagues, according to Minor League Baseball. At 5’6” and about 135 pounds, Werkheiser might not look the part.” But Magner, who admitted to a degree of hesitation when it came to hiring the first female member of his grounds crew in his 40-plus years with the Tides, said she’s played the often-gritty part perfectly.
