School district suing FieldTurf for early wear

With fairly new athletic fields deteriorating far before their time, Chaffey Joint Union High School District is suing an artificial turf manufacturer for the cost of original installation and replacement.

All told, the district is seeking $9.1 million from Fieldturf USA Inc. of Florida, Fieldturf Inc. of Canada and Fieldturf Tarkett SAS of France. The amount includes punitive damages designed to punish the company for its actions.

School districts nationwide have encountered similar problems with Fieldturf, including Walnut Valley Unified and South Pasadena Unified in Southern California. On their behalf, Chaffey also wants the manufacturer to stop charging an upgrade fee when districts demand a replacement for failing turf installed before 2011.
