California fields stay lush, with a sprinkle of creativity

This season, the grounds crew for the San Francisco Giants’ lush green field tried something new: It cut back on overnight watering. But then the ground felt a bit hard to the Giants, the World Series champions, and without some give in the grass, players could be more prone to injury. Time to turn the water back on. All around California, ballparks are trying to come up with ways to conserve water as the state faces a historic drought. Cities and towns and even agricultural areas in the farming-rich state have been told to cut back on water. Sports venues are showing that it takes some creativity and a lot of experimentation to find ways to do their part.
