Sub-surface irrigation system endorsed by Larry Musser

KISSS, a state-of-the-art, sustainable and water efficient sub-surface irrigation solution, has earned an endorsement from sports turf expert Larry Musser of PRZ International Sports Turf Consulting.

KISSS, a state-of-the-art, sustainable and water efficient sub-surface irrigation solution, has earned a key endorsement from sports turf expert Larry Musser, President and Chief Executive Officer of PRZ International Sports Turf Consulting. The product line, distributed in the U.S. by Irrigation Water Technologies America, Inc. (IWTA), was evaluated by Musser on a recent trip to Australia where the product has been in use at sports field facilities for more than a decade.

“KISSS works for sports turf, and that’s been made clear time and again in installations throughout Australia,” Musser said. “The ability to configure KISSS to successfully maintain proper irrigation levels at each sports field, despite unique climate and soil structure, proves its value as a versatile, effective, and sustainable solution for premier sports turf management.”

Musser’s independent tour of KISSS installations included a variety of projects completed through Irrigation Water Technologies (IWT), the Australian inventor and manufacturer of KISSS. Eleven sites were included in the survey throughout the state of New South Wales including: Wilson Park, part of the Sydney Olympic Park and currently used as a rugby field; Jack Nash Reserve multi-sport field; Hayter Park I soccer field which implements recycled water; and Pacific Hills Christian School’s multi-sport field which was installed more than a decade ago. Musser’s evaluation encompassed the turf quality and water usage at each site as well as each field’s age, use, and maintenance.

“Larry is a highly regarded sports field industry expert,” said James Bruce, IWTA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “As leaders of Larry’s caliber gain confidence in the KISSS solution, the barriers to implementing this revolutionary technology will start to fall. Larry has once again shown that he is prepared to go the extra step to truly understand innovative technologies that improve sports field management practices.”

In addition to 15 years of experience in teaching the techniques of proper turf maintenance via PRZ (Prescription Root Zone) Sports Field Maintenance and Design for Sustainability Seminars, Musser has spent 36 years studying soil, water, and wastewater chemistry. He is respected within the sports turf industry for extensive involvement in both new field design and turf consulting, and has been instrumental in changing how sports fields are maintained, scheduled, and funded.

KISSS systems use significantly less water than a traditional sprinkler system with less power, fertilizer, and other chemicals resulting in better turf and plant quality. The lack of surface sprinkler heads and fixtures adds another layer of benefit for sports field installations. KISSS works by pulsing water through subsurface lateral irrigation lines to a geo-textile fabric which, using capillary action, disperses water into the soil just below the roots. The geo-textile fabric maintains moisture uniformity along its length and allows soil to absorb water as needed at a slower and more effective rate. The polyethylene backing on the fabric also mitigates the potential for water loss through downward percolation. With proper scheduling, KISSS will sustain an optimum soil water balance, eliminating the “feast or famine” soil moisture condition delivered by other systems.
