The sport division of design firm Stantec has expanded its reach north of the border, winning two projects to design athletic field complexes in Canada.
The firm has been awarded a contract to design over $9 million of new athletic facilities for the University of Guelph in Ontario, including four new multipurpose synthetic turf fields, two new intramural softball fields, and related game management, locker, and restroom facilities. The project will also include significant improvements to the vehicular and pedestrian circulation routes that serve the 5,000-student campus, providing a long-missing connection between the main pedestrian spine and the campus arboretum.
The Boston, Mass.-based sport group has also begun initial studies for a new synthetic turf field project in Strathcona County, a municipality just west of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. Stantec is now reviewing potential sites for the field, which will be the first synthetic field in the county. Detailed design will begin over the next few months with construction expected next spring. Working in conjunction with its Canadian offices, the Boston staff expect up to 10 local employees may contribute to the two projects over the course of their progress.

Stantec’s sport division has designed a number of high-profile athletic fields and facilities for professional, collegiate, and community recreation programs throughout the US including Gillette Stadium, Boston College, Harvard University, and the University of Pennsylvania, among dozens more. The group also designed renovations to several fields for the Israeli Baseball League and led the development of Teddy Ebersol’s Red Sox Fields along the Esplanade in Boston.
