GSA-USA partners with Cornell IPM on ecological playfield project

Global Sports Alliance-USA is partnering with Cornell University and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission of New York and New Jersey on an “Eco-Friendly Playfield Project”.

The intensively used 10-acre playfield, located at Bear Mountain State Park in New York, will be managed as a model of ecologically compatible natural grass care. To minimize the environmental impact of managing this athletic field pesticides will not be used, nutrients will be carefully managed and all maintenance procedures will be closely evaluated.

The project leaders are sports turf specialist and GSA-NY Team Captain Kevin Trotta and Dr. Jennifer Grant, from Cornell’s Integrated Pest Management Program. The project team hopes to educate field users and encourage the park’s three million annual visitors to ‘consider the environment’ in the management of sports fields in their home communities.
