An effort to place artificial turf in historic Hackley Stadium is gaining momentum after officials made the unpopular decision to move last weekend’s football game to Grand Haven (MI) because of a wrecked field.

But whether the turf is funded by an upcoming bond proposal or from private donors is up to the school board and voters. The district’s athletic director is organizing a fundraising campaign for turf at the stadium.

But school board members are beginning to talk about including synthetic turf — a kind of artificial turf that includes sand and rubber fibers — on the list of projects that would be funded by a $12 million bond proposal that likely will be brought to voters next spring.
