"Enviros" try to block football

Opponents of a plan to build football fields at the northwest Shouldice Park are offside, say those pushing for the facility’s construction.

A citizens’ group fears two of three artificial turf fields slated to be located at 1515 Home Rd. N.W. will harm the sensitive Bow River.

Two of the fields will be within 15 meters of the river — also choking off the future twinning of a pedestrian path, said Lisa Higham, a member of Riverlands Preservation Calgary.

“We’re not opposed to the football fields, but we think its way too close to the river to give it adequate protection with an appropriate environmental reserve,” she said.

But the $9.5-million project — which was to break ground as early as this month — has been amended to meet environmental concerns, said Greg Peterson, president of the Greater Calgary Amateur Football Association (CGAFA).
