McCONNELLSBURG, PA—With a rake in his hand and a smile on his face, McConnellsburg’s Don Fowler has found out that the grass — Kentucky bluegrass, to be exact — is truly greener on the other side of retirement.
Literally.
That’s because since Fowler, 70, retired from his job with the Pennsylvania State Extension Services in 1994, he has volunteered as a Little League Baseball World Series groundskeeper and field manager.
In short, when you watch the World Series on television starting today and marvel at the field quality at Howard J. Lamade Stadium in Williamsport, think of Fowler and his handiwork.
For the last 12 years, Fowler has left home the Tuesday before the tournament to get the two Little League fields ready.
He has yet to get paid, but the experience has been priceless.
