PLANET gives Green Industry Contribution Award

-The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) is pleased to announce that Harris County Water Control and Improvement District No. 132 is the recipient of the PLANET 2007 Green Industry Contribution Award for its commitment to quality landscape development and awareness.

Harris County Water Control and Improvement District No. 132 is a political subdivision of the state of Texas and serves many of the residents of the Cypresswood subdivision. It is empowered to purchase, construct, operate, and maintain all works, improvements, facilities, and plants necessary for the supply and distribution of water, and to collect, transport, and treat household waste.

Since 50 to 70 percent of a resident’s water usage takes place outside of his or her home, the Authority’s Water Conservation Committee decided it would be beneficial to provide a means of demonstrating smart landscape techniques to improve water-use efficiency. Harris County Water Control and Improvement District No. 132 retained PLANET member Town Center Landscape, Inc., of Tomball, Texas, to install a water conservation garden on an underutilized vacant lot adjacent to the neighborhood water facility. The water garden shows local homeowners how to create a pleasing environment using appropriate irrigation techniques and smart plant choices. Irrigation products such as rotors, pop-up sprayers, drip tubing, and bubblers are on display. Not only is efficient water use emphasized, but plant selection, benefits of mulch and compost, and soil health are also demonstrated. In addition, local garden clubs and schools hold meetings in the garden.

Created in 1986, the Green Industry Contribution Award is presented by PLANET to major corporations, developers, and municipalities that are committed to using professional contracted services for quality interior plantscaping, landscaping, or lawn care. Town Center Landscape nominated Harris County Water Control and Improvement District No. 132 for this award, which will be presented to them at the PLANET Student Career Days, March 27–30, 2008, in Atlanta, Georgia.
